Hi Everybody[xikpatla itsintlan]

My name is József, I live in Hungary and I read this:"Do you speak English and feel like helping out the Nahuatl Wikipedia? Would you like to learn Nahuatl? If so, you can go to the Community Portal and leave a message." I think I can help to the Huiquipedia, and I would like to learn a new language. Now I speak hungarian, english, french and a little bit finnish. Geller7 11:00 24 Chiucnāuh 2009 (UTC)[responder]

Hi József. First you have to know about Nahuatl is that we can either refer to Classical Nahuatl (this Wikipedia) or Modern Nahuatl (currently on Incubator). The first was spoken by Mexica people in the ancient Mexico-Tenochtitlan city (home of the Aztec Empire) and evolved into Modern Nahuatl by the 1600s. It is technically a dead language, and so there are no native speakers left. Modern Nahuatl uses a slightly different writing method (like replacing /z/ with /s/) and many Spanish loan words. The advantages of Classical Nahuatl is there way more texts to help its understanding. Also, Classical Nahuatl can be a gateway to Modern Nahuatl. I'll be refering to Classical Nahuatl as "Nahuatl" from now on.

It is also called Mexican or Masewallahtolli, as many people believe Spanish is the same as Mexican... it is not even close.

If you already speak Hungarian, any language should come easy to you. I can give you the basics:
  • Classical Nahuatl uses classical ortography. Knowing this, you'll be able to read it quite well as Nahuatl has no accent:

a c ch cu e hu i l* m n o p qu t tl tz x y z / h*

These sound as anywhere in English, except

  • a (always as in bat)
  • c (always as /s/ before /e/ and /i/; always as /k/ before /a/ and /o/, /k/ anywhere else, double c cc as /x/ in axe)
  • ch (as in chain)
  • cu (becomes /uc/ before or after consonant; cu sounds as coo in cook, and uc as ook in the same word)
  • e (always as in bet)
  • hu (semivowel, represents /u/ or /w/ as in twilight; Huiquipedia is read Wikipedia, happens the same as cu with consonants, becomes /uh/)
  • i (always as in sin)
  • o (always as in lot)
  • qu (always /k/)
  • tl (/l/ becomes very soft when final as in "tlacatl" - pronounced /tlá-kat'/)
  • tz (/ts/, as in oats)
  • x (/sh/, as in sheep)
  • z (always /s/, never before /e/ or /i/)

Long vowels have a slight longer pronunciation:

  • ā (as down)
  • ē (as bear)
  • ī (as beep)
  • ō (as saw)

Please note this

  • 'h alone (called saltillo, pronounced as Irish /ch/, or Spanish /j/ or English /h/ in ham)
  • l (never used alone at the beginning of a word, except Lalaxtli (orange);
  • ALL Nahuatl words are grave, so Nahuatl pronounces "Ná-watl", Mēxihco "Mea-shí'-ko" and so on.

I'll take the main paragraph, how is to be read, how this would be translated into Modern Nahuatl and what it means in English:

Is it true you speak Nahuatl? Everybody writes this Wikipedia, we all do. This is your encyclopedia; this is our encyclopedia.

¿Tlen kihtowa moyolo?

No propongo rehacer wiktionary aquí.

Drini 23:48 5 feb 2007 (UTC)

Me parece buena propuesta.--Ricardo 03:08 7 feb 2007 (UTC)
Me parece bien tambien a mi.

Aclaraciones importantes[xikpatla itsintlan]

*Imagen promocional de Coldplay tomada de la Wikipedia inglesa. El uso será ilustrativo en el artículo de la banda.
*Promotional image of Coldplay taken from the English Wikipedia. It'll have an illustrative use on the band's article.
    {{fairusein|Coldplay}}

Bot policy[xikpatla itsintlan]

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. This will involve creating a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and adding a line at the top noting that it is used here. In particular, this policy allows automatic acceptance of known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests.

Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; it will be implemented in one week if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests.

Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki[xikpatla itsintlan]

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the Japanese language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. In fact, of 1,736 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 3.11% of the messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages for 126 extensions, with 2,174 messages. Many of them are used in WMF projects and they are vital for understanding the wiki. Currently 0.00% of the WMF extension messages have been translated. Translators for over 90 languages contribute their work to MediaWiki this way every month.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privileges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on MediaWiki.org and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we will be happy to help you get started.

Thank you very much for your attention and I do hope to see some of you on Betawiki soon! Thanks, GerardM@Betawiki

Global bots[xikpatla itsintlan]

Hello. The standard bot policy was updated to allow global bots, which are now technically possible. These are trusted bots that will be given bot access on all wikis that allow global bots (the local policy or request page must explicitly allow them, or they won't get access on this wiki). The current requirements for global bots are:

  • the bot must only maintain interlanguage links or fix double-redirects;
  • the bot must already be active on several wikis, with long-term contributions to back up its trustworthiness.

Does anyone object to allowing global bots on this wiki? I'll update the local policy in a week if there are no objections. Thanks. —Pathoschild 02:14:18, 27 Tlachicōnti 2008 (UTC)

I want to colaborate[xikpatla itsintlan]

My name is Mauricio and live in Guadalajara, Jalisco. I colaborate actually with other wikipedias. I can speak English, Spanish, French, and a litlle German and Swedish. I find really interesting and beautiful to know a language of my own country, so ancient, so different to the other languages I speak, so magical, that's why I want to learn náhuatl. I think any indigenous language is worth learning and if I can to colaborate to make this Huiquipedia better, I'll do.

A proposal[xikpatla itsintlan]

Hi! Has anyone thought about create a portal where one would be able to discuss about vocabulary and how to form compound words and discuss if those words are right or wrong. Monthly the managers could publish a list of the words which have been accepted and add those words to the Wiktionary. So, what d'you think about?

It's a good idea. It's supposed we've got Huiquipedia:Yancuīctlahtōlli for that, but's since we're a relly small community, it's easier to tell each of the four the new word is being used. But adding them to the Wiktionary is something I hadn't thought about.--Fluence 10:34 4 Chicuēi 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to request a bot flag for my bot User:タチコマ robot. My bot deals with

  • Double redirects
  • Interwiki linking
  • Commons delinking

I already have a bot flag on a large number of wikis: m:User:White Cat#Bots

If this is the wrong place to request this, please move it to the correct page. Thank you.

-- Cat chi?

So it is clear you do not care much about the community input as I see no evidence of it. In addition you clearly know that I know absolutely no Spanish or whatever that language it is. You are inventing a language barrier. -- Cat chi? 19:57 27 Chicuēi 2008 (UTC)
If I had written in nahuatl you wouldn't have understood it either. I'll leave this a week more to see if anyone else writes an opinion. Drini 20:45 30 Chicuēi 2008 (UTC)
And my earlier comment was directed to the community explaining my vote. Spanish is the 2nd most used language here (as I can't communicate effectively in nahuatl yet). Drini 20:49 30 Chicuēi 2008 (UTC)

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live[xikpatla itsintlan]

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you[xikpatla itsintlan]

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net[xikpatla itsintlan]

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

How can we improve the usability for your language[xikpatla itsintlan]

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

Soy Christian Sandoval (Chris Muerto)y quiero aprender Nahuatl.

Interessant projecte[xikpatla itsintlan]

Hola:
