- No problem, I can speak English. Niltze = Hello! It's great to see people interested in this wiki. Any help here is always welcome. - :) - Piolinfax 12:47, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi!. I don't have much time now but at least I can tell the most common four first numbers:
- 1: Ce (ze is just an alternative spelling: spelling in Nahuatl has to be settled down yet!)
- 2: Ome
- 3: Ei (often yei).
- 4: Nahui.
Why the other ones? I guess some are dialectal and/or honorific and/or aesthetic etc. variations.
Maybe it is a good idea that you name these numerical articles just ce, ome, ei and nahui instead 1 (number) (by the way, I don't know the word for number in Nahuatl. Actually I don't know much about the language but I hope to learn a bit! Now I have to go, I'll write to you asap! :) - Piolinfax 10:49, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

- Niltze, Glenn! It's great to see someone so interested in all this stuff. I'll try to answer you according to my (limited) knowledge.
> [...] have the Nahuatl language a glyph or word for zero? I have only been able to find one address - Before this address, I had the impression that Nahuatl language did not have a zero. Is this Nahuatl zero "wrong"?: izcalli(Izcalli, the Nahuatl word for "House of re-awakening").org: Numbers Quote: "...[Nahuatl: - maybe Coh too?:] Koh - Zero..."
- I had the same impression as you (no "zero" in Aztec times in Aztec places) and actually I think we both are right on that notion. Remember that Nahuatl is a living language and they must have a word (and, consequently, the concept) for zero now but, as far as my knowledge reaches, I have never heard anything about classic Aztec/Chichimec zeroes. "Koh" (or, as you rightly guess, "coh") might be a "new" word... or an old one (meaning sth. like, for example, "nothing" or "empty" or etc...) with a new meaning attached for the purpose. Anyway, I don't really know; that is just my guess. Mayas surely had the concept of "zero" (which is a really wonderful achievement, a quantum leap in thought patterns, though the use of the concept was sort of different from the use of it in India) but Mayas an Aztecs were two really different peoples speaking two very different languages (Nahuatl and Yucatec/Lacandón/Chol are not related languages at all).
> Do Nahuatl language not use a "bar" for the number five 5 - I have only been able to find use of "dots" up till nine 9? Mayan language do use a "bar" for five 5.
- I don't know if those flaglike glyphs in [1] and [2] are a modern creation meaning "5" or they are classical representations of the number. It is the first time I see them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were classical. Nowadays Nahuatl people use our numerical notation (0, 1, 2, 3,...) but I wouldn't be surprised if, in the future, they devised a new alphabet/syllabary for the language. I know that the idea exists and some designs have been created though they are not used (yet). Numbers might follow suit or the system of dots, flags and feathers would be adopted.
> Is it possible that you or someone else, can or have taken pictures of Nahuatl glyphs (for example of the numbers), that they are willing to give to Wikipedia under the GFDL (GNU Free Documentation License)?
- I don't have any of that material under the GFDL. Anyway, I guess that some images of codices and Pre-Columbian iconography and art should be placed in public domain sites. I mean, they belong to mankind, don't they? Anyway, I'll see if any of my acquaintances owns or has access to such materials.
- About the Aztec glyphs: remember that Aztecs, unlike Mayas, seemingly hadn't a developed a writing system (not a thoroughly logographic, syllabic, alphabetic or mixed one, I mean; according to scholars, most of their glyphs/pictures are just regarded as aide-memoires and seldom represented language; i.e.: a kind of worldless comic strips).
- Thanx for the linx, Glenn. They're gr8! - Piolinfax 00:59, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Niltze, Glenn! I haven't been around often but it is good to see that this is not a totally forgotten place. I changed the text in Template:StartMessage as you suggested. It's good that you pointed it out 'coz I hadn't realized it was an outdated message. :) - Tochpapalotl (Piolinfax) 19:41, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
About 16, 17 & 18
[xikpatla itsintlan]Niltze, Glenn! I have just placed links to your excellent Nahuatl number series. Congratulations! :) If a bunch of Nahuatl speakers were as keen on working here as you are, this wiki would quickly soar into the skies. I have noticed something: when doing placing the number links I saw that 16, 17 and 18 were named as [caxtollice]] - caxtolliome - caxtolliyei. I did some research yesterday in a library and found the forms caxtollince - caxtollinome - caxtollinyei, with an "n" in. I don't relly know what the reason is but I guess it has something to do with a plural form: "-in" is sometimes a suffix for plural. In internet, I have found a few more of your spellings than those with an "n" but I suspect this could be due to amateurism of the web pages involved or just simple mistakes when typing the texts (it is only a thought, though). Sometimes the internet happens to be a not very reliable source. See you and keep the excellent work! :) - Tochpapalotl (Piolinfax) 18:33, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Hi again, I have just discoverd that I had missed placin hyphens (-) in between numbers 17 and 18. Anyway, what I have just written above is still true for caxtollince (or caxtollin-ce) which is the one that misled me. - Tochpapalotl (Piolinfax) 18:42, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC) I'm going to move it to caxtollin-ce right now...
Could you please write a stub http://nah.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w or da wiki? Only 2 -5 sentences enough. Please. Pietras1988 11:33 10 Feb 2006 (UTC)
- I am sorry I am not able to translate english sentences to Nahuatl. Yet... Glenn 11:39 10 Feb 2006 (UTC)
